Connecting cPanel Email to an External Mail Client or Mobile Device

Please note that as of January 1, 2025, email functionality like that described below will no longer be available for those with Student/Personal and Faculty/Professional Shared Hosting plans.

When you have an email address attached to your domain, you don’t have to use the webmail provided by Reclaim Hosting. cPanel provides specific settings so that you can connect your email to another device like your laptop or mobile device, or another email mailbox entirely.  Using standard POP/IMAP settings from cPanel, you can connect your email to virtually any mail client, including Gmail, Apple Mail, Outlook, or a mobile app.*

*Note: This guide covers reading your cPanel-hosted email through another client using POP or IMAP credentials. If you want to move your email service entirely away from Reclaim's servers, see Understanding Email: MX Records and Connecting to a Third-Party Email Provider.

Step 1: Get Your Mail Server Settings from cPanel

First, you’ll need to get the settings needed to connect your email account properly. Login to your cPanel.

From there, you’ll navigate to the ‘Email Accounts’ section.

You’ll see a list of all email accounts you currently have set up. Click ‘Connect Devices’ within the same line as the email address you’d like to connect to your device.

This will bring up a list of mail clients and you can absolutely use those options to set up the email client, but we’re going to use the settings listed below these options under "Mail Client Manual Settings", specifically the settings outlined in blue, under the "Secure SSL/TLS Settings (Recommended)" heading.

The Mail Client Manual Settings section in cPanel contains the information you will need to complete the email setup process on your device. When adding your account, your email app may ask for details such as the account type (IMAP or POP), incoming and outgoing mail servers, ports, encryption settings, and your username/password.

Step 2: Enter the Settings in Your Mail Client

The exact steps will vary depending on which app or service you're using, but you'll generally be asked for:

  • Account type — IMAP (keeps mail synced across devices) or POP (downloads mail to one device). See Understanding Email Retrieval: POP vs. IMAP if you're unsure which to choose.
  • Incoming mail server, port, and encryption
  • Outgoing (SMTP) mail server, port, and encryption
  • Username (your full email address)
  • Password (the password set for this mailbox in cPanel)

Use the values from the Connect Devices screen in cPanel to fill in these fields. Refer to your specific client's instructions below:

If you run into any issues, feel free to submit a ticket to support@reclaimhosting.com with screenshots of the settings you're using.
