Have you received emails from cPanel lately that mention Potential reduced AutoSSL coverage on particular URLs?
They're likely for URLs like webmail.test.university.edu or cpanel.test.university.edu. That email may look like this:
This is due to how the DNS is set up for your particular URL.
URLs that are not using Reclaim Hosting's nameservers (ns1.reclaimhosting.com and ns2.reclaimhosting.com), can be pointed to our server using either an A record or a CNAME record.
- A Record: This will point to the domain using the server's IP address. The record will typically looks like this:
- CNAME record: You can use a wildcard CNAME record to point the domain to the server. That record looks like this:
*Both of these records will point the domain to our server, but we recommend using the A record to point your domain to our server's IP.
If you're receiving these errors from AutoSSL, it's likely you're using one of the DNS management options as listed above. That is because while you probably have the main URL pointed to the server using an A record, the subdomains like webmail.test.university.edu are not pointed to our server.
If that's the case, you can adjust your DNS settings wherever the domain's DNS management is handled. Once the domain or subdomain in question points to our server, then AutoSSL will be able to add an SSL certificate for it.
Be aware that if your domain is not using our Reclaim Hosting namer servers, the DNS records within your cPanel > Zone Editor are not valid. DNS records in the Zone Editor are only valid if the domain is set to use our nameservers. Otherwise, you will need to manage the DNS records with the company where the domain is registered, or through the University's IT department if needed (for .edu domains).
